Small Business of the Month, December 2016
Tell us about the origins and impetus of K.e. Jones Jewelers.
Kathy Jones has worked in the fine jewelry business for over 30 years. After 21 years of working for three other small business jewelry stores, Kathy decided it was time to open her own store. After all, she always handpicked the jewelry each store carried, created lifelong relationships with clients and their families, and ran each business as if it were her own. She decided in 2007 that it was time to bet on herself.

What is your definition of an entrepreneur? How do you fit that definition?
An entrepreneur has a passion and chases it. That’s exactly what I did.
What's the best part of owning your own business?
Showing my three children and seven grandchildren that you can do anything at any age. I was 49 when I opened my store. I’ve always told them hard work and passion can take you anywhere.
What's the most difficult aspect of owning your own business?
When you’re a small business owner you wear all of the hats. Sometimes all at once!
What advice would you give to those thinking of opening up a small business in general, and in the Central Pa. region?
Surround yourself with trusted advisors.
What does it mean to you to be a small business owner?
Being a small business owner is not for the faint of heart. There’s a lot of challenges but to know I’ve gone after a dream and have impacted my community means the world.
In your opinion, how important are small businesses to the Central Pa. region? How important are they to the nation as a whole?
Small businesses are vital to creating a community. We have to support them as a region and as a nation. Without small business, we are left with huge stores that do not make your shopping experience personal. Small business represents a big part of the American dream.
Owning a small business requires a tremendous amount of work and dedication. What is the single most important moment for you that represents the reason for all of your effort and time?
Every single time my parents visited from out of state and came into my store they told me how proud they were. At 50+ years old that never ever got old and made every sacrifice worth it.
Where and with whom do you find inspiration as a small business owner?
God has always carried me through and I’m inspired by my three children. They each have a different point of view and I learn a lot from them.
Do you have any events, happenings or specials coming up in the near future?
Christmas is right around the corner. Throughout November and December I’ll have a variety of holiday sales.
Thank you for giving small businesses a voice. I’ve never been more proud to be in such great company.
