The Well Groomed Tree

Hairstyles change and so do tree pruning practices. The haircut or style you sport says a lot about you and even tips folks off about your background and experience. Same goes for trees.

Get Rid of the "OW" and Bring Back the "WOW"!

Maybe you’ve noticed that growing things, based on how things used to grow around here, makes for a pretty poor plan these days. For folks like me who labor in the gardens and landscapes of central Pa., it is increasingly difficult to get decent performance from the trees, woody shrubs and many flowering plants that were reliable staples of the regional landscape menu.

Bugging Your Calls.

The world of cloak and dagger is populated by all manner of animal operatives. One only has to think of moles who gain the confidence of the community but rat out their friends when their masters call on them. But the stink bug is a warrior among warriors.

A Ditch by Any Other Name

Though you may have already forgotten last season’s floods, the frequency and severity of these events is not lost on folks who are responsible for managing our water supply. Storm water is the buzzword for the bad guy behind every rainy day; and folks are desperate to deal with it.

Why Georgie Doesn't Garden

Why Georgie Doesn't Garden

When’s the last time you rolled your own cigarette, made your own soap, knitted your own sweater or any number of things you know people do? And why? Because you just don’t have to. And really, with all the things we do have to do or would rather do, we won’t be gardening anytime soon.

Flying Fish

Among mankind’s oldest fascinations are soaring like the birds and imagineering creatures imbued with powers that exceed those of earth’s ordinary inhabitants. Calling to mind Greek Mythology, we are reminded of cautionary tales about attempting to fly. But all through history, humans kept at it until they mastered the space above our earthly origins.

Stems and Seeds

Superficially, growing and selling pot is already a major industry and economic driver in many parts of the county. The health hazards associated with breathing the byproducts of combustion into your lungs seems obvious but tobacco is legal and the penalties for growing, manufacturing and distributing that product funds a lot of jobs and economic activity. Can pot can be treated in a similar fashion?

This is a Kid’s Brain on Veggies

Not an easy task, but the evidence promoting the benefits of healthier eating is compelling. So compelling that, I hope to reverse the bad attitude bad habits that have crept in over the years and look forward to kids who are, well, more normal, feel better about themselves and put that big brain to more use than just managing their mouth.

Come Again?

Come Again?

When I think crops form the garden, I see cans or zip lock bags full of produce festooning the fridge and bunchs of dead stalks and leaves for the compost pile. Many of the plants we grow to eat are annuals; often because they have a tropical heritage and don’t like winter.

What’s Bugging You About Squirrels?

What’s Bugging You About Squirrels?

The North American woods are not inhabited by monkeys but we do have squirrels. Like their primate counterparts; very agile, curious and they’ll wreck havoc on the artifacts that have come to define modern American life; roof eves, electrical insulation, gardens and birdfeeders.
