Community News: Shipoke Grounddog Day Celebration
While Punxsutawney celebrates Groundhog Day this winter, Harrisburg’s riverfront Shipoke neighborhood will hold its annual Grounddog Day celebration featuring “Shipoke Sheena,” our own furry prognosticator. The event, open to the public, is set for 10:00 am on Saturday, January 31, 2015, in the Conoy Street Kiddie Park (corner of Race and Conoy Streets). The event will feature a ceremony in which Sheena will make a prediction about the weather. The festivities then will move into a nearby historic carriage house for music, food, and fun for the whole family.
“Shipoke is a fun, community-spirited neighborhood, and this special event started last year is a new but popular tradition where people can socialize and chase away the winter blues together,” said Shipoke Neighborhood Association Co-President Joanne Kaldy. She added, “We welcome people from across the area to join us for this celebration.”
The event will feature Master of Ceremonies Reverend Hal Fox and a variety of special guests and dignitaries. There also will be a special children’s program with treats, groundhog stories, and groundhog-themed arts and crafts.
