Whether it’s Amazon.com, superstores like Barnes & Noble and Borders or even big box retailers like Wal-Mart and Target, independent bookstores are facing serious business challenges. From 1995 to 2005, membership in the American Booksellers Association (ABA), the trade association of independent bookstores, declined from 5,500 to just over 1,700. But judging by the vitality of three thriving central Pennsylvania bookstores, rumors of the death of the independent bookstore, at least in this region, appear to be greatly exaggerated.
  • The Coldest Night In January

By Jadrian Klinger These are just the facts, nothing more. On the evening of January 10, 2003, in a quiet neighborhood in Camp Hill, Pa., Randi Lee Trimble’s life was stolen away. Her husband, Brian Trimble, along with his friend and coworker, Blaine Norris, now locked away in prison for life, confessed to conspiring and then carrying out their plan to murder 28-year-old Randi Trimble. Their motive: cash in on a life insurance plan that would pay out $100,000, of which $20,000 would go to Blaine Norris to cover credit card debt he accumulated by filming an independent horror flick. To Brian and Blaine it was simple: Blaine would be free of debt, and Brian would be free to live the bachelor life with $80,000 in his pocket.

I’m kneeling in a tiny, open-air wat sitting high on a minute, mountainous island located in the middle of a vast reservoir, the largest in Thailand. If this spot isn’t the ends of the earth, it feels that way. The only sounds piercing the calm are the chatter of a few exotic birds, and, far off, the motor of a long boat – perhaps the very one that parted the still waters, ferrying me here. The warm, moist air, redolent of incense, stirs gently, brushing the trees.

Creation credit for our favorite hand-held meal may go to the Earl of Sandwich, but the imaginative American melting-pot palate gave the sandwich spunk and style.
