When I think of the original movies the thoughts that usually came to mind were the apes reminded me of the people on the Twilight Zone episode where the woman thought she was ugly and deformed but it turned out she was beautiful and everyone else looked deformed compared to her. I also thought that the planet reminded me of 50% of the places the old Star Trek show would beam down to on a mission (desert sets, lots of rocks, etc.). It wasn't an idea that ever drew me in. So imagine my surprise when I sat down to watch Rise of the Planet of the Apes and actually was on the edge of my seat through the entire movie.

It's been said that there are no new ideas in how to tell a story, it's how the story is told that matters. That could be the case of the mixed martial arts fighting movie Warrior.

Loosely based on the experiences of the film's screenwriter, Will Reiser, 50/50 is a touching account of Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a radio journalist who is shocked to learn he's diagnosed with a rare cancer located in his spine. While it's understandable that a movie based around the main character's battle with journey might not be the most appealing way of spending a night at the movies, 50/50 somehow manages to pull it off in a surprising way. With it's mix of comedy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Adam Lerner adding an everyman likability to the lead, 50/50 does surprise in it's entertainment value.

I have a friend who is drawn to books with single-word titles. Sometimes one word says it all.

Drive is one of those movies that gained word of mouth online, the praise from the critics building a legend for this modest, art house, independent movie. Just like it's protagonist, it's quiet and a slow build but when the cards are down becomes an engaging, exciting roller coaster that will leave audiences trying to catch their breath.

If you have geek friends or are a geek yourself, at some point I'm sure the conversation of what you would do if you or someone you know had superpowers has come up. Would you enjoy it? Would it freak you out? Would you use it for good or evil or would it just make you want to wear your underwear outside your pants? What would it really be like to bust free of the trappings of the four color comic book world and apply superpowers in real life? In the case of the movie Chronicle that takes those ideas and questions into consideration, you get some interesting results.
